A week of hands-on research instead of the usual school routine: Twenty dedicated students from all over Germany, as well as from two German schools in Turkey, tackled real, previously unsolved challenges from science and industry as part of a modeling week organized by the CAMMP (Computational and Mathematical Modeling Program) project.
Working in small groups, the participants developed mathematical models for cutting-edge problems:
- Medicine: Heart simulations for the virtual testing of new drugs (partner: Microcard)
- Process engineering: Modeling precise temperature sensors for chemical plants (partner: BASF)
- Energy transition: Sustainable conversion of Berlin’s district heating network to renewable energy (partner: Zuse Institute Berlin)
- Logistics: Algorithms for the time-optimal allocation of dynamic company orders (partner: Inform)
The MINT-EC Modeling Week took place in Karlsruhe from September 6 to 11, 2026—marking its fifth edition. To balance out the intensive project work, the program included sports activities in the Schlossgarten. At the end of the week, the students presented their results at the KIT Campus North with professional presentations directly to clients from research and industry. As a well-deserved conclusion and a glimpse into STEM practice, the week ended with a guided tour of the SCC’s high-performance computing center and its supercomputer, HoreKa 2. It was an inspiring week that provided practical insights into STEM degree programs and scientific work.
